A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.

We are checking video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures originated was based on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.

We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
