Vicky McClure are set to reprise their roles in the popular crime series

The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
