Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
