California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has indicated that he will decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 elections conclude.

"Yes, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor commented when asked about giving serious thought to a White House bid after the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

Newsom's current term as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he noted that any choice is still years away.

"Fate will determine that," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

The California governor has stepped forward as a high-profile opponent of the Trump administration, using his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would increase Democratic representation in Congress in following redistricting by Republicans. This action has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom does not care about Californians in a recent segment on a major news network. The secretary disclosed intentions to cut government money from the state and suggested suspending the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," Duffy said, after a this week's tragic collision in California involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.

His administration highlighted that the federal government had renewed the individual's authorization multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a CDL under federal law.

Duffy had earlier stated he was holding back $40 million from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a recent release countering the funding warnings. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate much lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."

Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects

A this month's poll showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that the governor should run for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has grown to an typical level of 33.5% from previous levels, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of over 40% to under 40%.

Some time ago, the governor remarked while traveling several swing states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for 2028.

He mentioned his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The thought that a guy who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, remarkable," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I await who steps forward in 2028 and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the voters."
